March 7, 2016 - Due to wet conditions, the Flagstaff Regional Landfill (in Sedgewick) is limiting vehicle access to site bins only. Unloading by hand is being permitted, but there is no access to dumping sites. All other Community transfer sites are open at the normally scheduled dates & times.
In response to concerns involving signage at the Killam Memorial Arena, Killam Council, in consultation with the Killam Recreation Board, have adopted the following:
* Changing all signs to portray only the team logo
* Placement of historical plaques next to the sign of each hockey organization, past and present that will include team names and dates
* Signage will be relocated within the arena with active team signs located on the north end, and historical team signs located on the south end
Our intent is to preserve Killam’s rich sports history, while being sensitive to the history and culture of our First Nations friends. We want to assure all that it was not the intent of our Community to offend, nor to offend our Community. For this, we sincerely apologize.
We have learned from this experience and are committed to open communication with our residents and neighbors, and will continue to strive to be a progressive community, responsive to ongoing change.
There will be some small changes on Killam's utility bills, effective as of January 1, 2016.
Administration costs for utility services has remained the same. However, the monthly garbage rate will be increasing from $31 per month to $33 per month. This is to ensure a cost recovery program that Council has indicated they would like to see. This increased cost also includes the branch recycle area that was completed in 2015 and the additional time/cost that will be used by Public Works for chipping the branches from the area.
There have also been some increases in some of the general Administration costs of the Town Office. The costs are as follows: Tax Certificates $25, Certificate of Compliance $150, NSF Cheque Fees $50 and Response to False Fire Alarms by the Killam Fire Department $250 per false call.
At the recent Council Meeting held in December, it was decided that Home Owners will be charged $250 each time the Killam Fire Department responds to a False Fire Alarm at their home.
This decision was made after reviewing the statisics presented from 2015. Over the course of the year, the Killam Fire Department responsed to 16 false alarms within Killam. A number of these were "re-occuring" calls. Please check with your security providers and ensure the Home Owner is contacted prior to the request for the Fire Department to be dispatched!
