Tent Caterpillors are Here!

2015-06-02 08:33:27

Some Killam Residents have discovered these fuzzy visitors in their trees! The Forest Tent Caterpillar is common in our area, but sometimes they appear in greater numbers than what we normally see.  These caterpillars are active during April - June, when they start eating their way through some of our common trees.  In our area, they can be found on aspen and poplar, but will also eat leaves on apple, cherry, white ash, birch, mountain ash, maple, oak, elm and willow.  Forest Tent Caterpillar infrestations can cause branch diebacks and growth reduction over the coarse of the growing season. Typically, one season of infestation does not kill a tree under normal conditions. However, if the tree is unhealthy and stressed already, a caterpillar infestation may be fatal.

Once caterpillars are spotted, they can be treated in a number of ways.

2015-05-26 14:22:17

The Town of Killam is very excited to announce our new Memorial Tree Program! Starting immediately, the Town is taking requests for memorial trees.

If you have a loved one you would like to remember by having a tree planted in their memory, please see below for how our program will work:

  1. Town of Killam Public Works will plant the trees along the walking trail at least 25 feet apart.
  1. The Town has a list of approved species available to choose from based on our weather and soil conditions.
  1. The cost of the purchase of the tree and the donor/memorial plaque will be at the donor’s expense - price ranges will be communicated   in advance and trees must be paid for up front.

Click to view trees and cost options for 2015:

  1. Town of Killam PW will order trees from the nursery and pick them up and bring them back to town for planting.
  1. The Town reserves the right to limit the number of memorial trees planted on municipal lands.
  1. Memorial Trees will be maintained (including watering) by the Town staff, to ensure that they are properly maintained during the period of establishment.
  1. The Town does not guarantee the tree against acts of vandalism, damage or failure as a result of environmental stresses or conditions which may impact negatively on the health of a memorial tree.
  1. The Town will not be responsible for the cost to replace the tree should the tree not survive.
