The Battle River Community Foundation is holding the 2014 Community Builders' Dinner on Saturday, August 23, 2014 at the Killam Community Hall. This year, the couple of Stan and Sharleen Chevraux are being honoured.
The couple have taken part in many community roles over the years. County Councillor, Chair of the Killam Hospital Board and Killam Hospital Foundation, coaching trapshooting and teaching of firearms safety, founding of the Flagstaff Writers’ Guild and the Battle River Training Hub, Director with Alberta Flying Farmers, County Agricultural Advisory Board, participation with the Chamber of Commerce and the Adult Learning Council as well as contributing to the Knox United Church - are just a small list.
The Community Builders Dinner will feature a variety of speakers who will toast the couple, as well as a number of items available for live auction. Live Auction proceeds will be used to establish a fund in Stan and Sharleen’s name, which will support education and the local hospital.

Flagstaff Waste will be introducing new bins to add to the recylcing program! Coming in July, recylce bins will take on a new appearance! Currently, green bins are for compost of yard waste material, blue bins are for cardboard recylcing, and the addition of a new yellow bin will take care of paper, rigid plastics (#1-17) and tin and aluminium cans.
To help make recylcing easier, new signage will also clearly indicate what items are to be recycled in which bins. Watch for details in the upcoming weeks!
The Killam Adult Housing Committee is in search of Developers who may be interested in the opportunity to undertake the construction of “mature living”, “worry free” duplexes within the Town of Killam. Killam is a thriving small town that can offer senior residents all the needed amenities such as local shopping venues, community services programs, and a fully functioning hospital with 4 doctors on staff.
The proposed project area available for purchase is ideally located, adjacent to an existing adult living complex which is close to Killams’ downtown. The land allows for 4 duplex units and provides opportunity to utilize a beautiful southerly exposure. Construction may be phased, building one or two units and selling, prior to proceeding with the next set.
The Killam Adult Housing Committee, after receiving positive feedback from area residents, is excited about this project and would be willing to assist in promoting and marketing this venture, should you so desire.

“Life without Compromise”
A thriving town in east-central Alberta with a population of 981, Killam combines a modern urban lifestyle with the traditional values of a rural community.
Killam is situated at the junction of two major highways, #13 the alternate to the Yellowhead extending east and west, and #36 extending north and south. Leading the way are the active treatment and auxiliary hospital, public school (K-9), (with a k-12 school just a five minute drive away with busses available for senior high residents living in the area [bused from KPS Mon-Fri]), RCMP detachment, medical professionals, large drug store and grocery store, recreation and senior citizens facilities.
Killam residents are particularly proud of their parks and leisure facilities. The sports grounds featuring 4 ball diamonds, an 800 seat Community Centre, and the Killam Agriplex with its indoor swimming pool, artificial ice arena, bowling alley, fitness room, multipurpose room and concession are well used by citizens and visitors.
Motels, hotels, restaurants, and camping facilities provide excellent care to their guests, and with these facilities becoming regular stopping places for frequent travellers.
