On June 16, 2009, the Town of Killam was notified that we had been accepted into the ACE Communities program. The Active, Creative, Engaged (ACE) Communities initiative is a program that has been spearheaded by Alberta Recreation and Parks Association and is focusing on the enhancement of the quality of life in rural Alberta. The goal is to achieve this by strengthening community leadership, collaboration, and innovation through recreation, parks, arts, culture and heritage.
The ACE Communities initiative is made possible by the generous support of the Rural Alberta's Development Fund, Encana, and Canwest. A partner community, such as Killam, has the potential of gaining up to $45,000 of in-kind support and resources provided by ACE (over a two year period), as well as $10,000 of seed funding to help start a project chosen by the community.
"An evening of Inspiration, Information and Celebration" was kicked off with the Parade of Lights held on a snowy, Friday December 4th evening.
Weather conditions earlier in the day had been far from favorable, but the true spirit of the community shone that evening!
Following the parade, local volunteers were acknowledged and a motivational presentation made by Ian Hill, ACE Ambassador, encouraged members of the community to become active in the future of our town for our children.
The ACE Committee has recently been awarded the "Let Them Be Kids" Helping Hand Award. This grant will match the funds that the ACE Committee raises, 50/50, for the bike/skateboard park and outdoor exercise equipment for the Heritage Park Revitalization project. A bike/skateboard park design meeting will be held in the near future. Input from youth who may be interested in this aspect of the park are more than welcome to attend!
